My research interests focus on developing holistic insights on housing environments, including knowledge on spatial, social, and sensory aspects that affect urban dwellers everyday life, their wellbeing, and further equal accessibility and usability of the environment. I work as a project manager in Tampere University ASUTUT Sustainable Housing Design research group https://www.sustainablehousingdesign.com/, and as a director in my Helsinki based architectural studio Arkkitehtitoimisto Huvila Oy https://ahuvila.fi/, where we focus on user-oriented housing design ranging from one-family houses and house renovations to joint co-operative townhouse and multistory apartment block projects and urban infills. Combining grounded experiences from practice to research is an integral part of my expertise. To created impact, architecture as an applied discipline needs to be rooted in the current developments in both the construction industry and society in general, as well as emerging real-life situations in urban contexts.

My ongoing work in ASUTUT includes a SWS PROFI 5 seed-funded project The Finnish home and sustainable welfare interconnections, in which I am co-editing an interdisciplinary book that deals with diverse notions of home in life course. I am also currently finalizing my PhD with the title of Cultural Encounters in Housing Environment – Cultural Diversity of Everyday Life in Urban Housing Design. In recent years I have worked in Housing in Change project (2020-2021) that focused on dwellers needs and how they can be met within private and shared spaces in housing environment, and in a multidisciplinary project Dwellers in Agile Cities (2016-2019), of which we received the Tampere university societal impact main award in 2019.
