Sirkku Kotilainen is acting as professor of media education at Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences (ITC), Tampere University. Her research can be profiled as youth civic participation in digital societies with digital skills as critical media literacies including critical awareness on algorithm-based communication, together with the research interest on participatory methodologies. She has conducted research app. 30 years and been involved in European and beyond in international research projects on Children and Youth Online, for example, EuKids Online research network.

She is teaching in international master programs: MDP on Sustainable Digital Life and Sustainable Digital Societies (Erasmus+). In doctoral level she is supervising, f.ex. in the PhD program Convergence of Humans and Machines (2023 – 2027).
