Valentine Berthet

Valentine Berthet joined Tampere University and the ERC project 'EUGenDem' in September 2018 as a doctoral researcher. Berthet holds an LL.M. with Distinction in International law from the University of Kent (2017) and a Bachelor of Law from Grenoble-Alpes University (2014). As part of the EUGenDem project, Berthet’s research focuses on the European Parliament's policies and practices on gendered violence bodily rights. This includes analyzing the discursive practices around those issues and assessing the European Parliament's role in advancing gender equality. Berthet studied specific case studies, such as sexual harassment in the European Parliament, the EU’s ratification to the Istanbul Convention, and the development of a supranational right to abortion in the EU. Her most recent publications include "Gender, Violence, and Political Institutions: Struggles over Sexual Harassment in the European Parliament" (Social Politics 2021, co-authored with Professor Johanna Kantola); "Norm under fire: Support and opposition to EU’s ratification of the Istanbul Convention in the European Parliament" (International Feminist Journal of Politics, 2022) and "United in crisis: Abortion politics in the European Parliament and political groups' dispute over EU values" (Journal of Common Market Studies, forthcoming).
