Project Details
Description
Following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine and Finland's 2023 NATO accession, Finland has experienced a process of rapid militarisation. The HomeFront project investigates militarisation in Finland through the lens of 'home', focusing on the gendered dynamics of care and militarism. Four work packages (WPs) structure the research: WP1 examines NATO's impacts on the daily life in Mikkeli, WP2 investigates gendered carework in 'soldiers' homes,' WP3 analyses representations of the home in Finnish war museums, and WP4 maps out feminist utopias as a driver for demilitarisating the home. Using ethnography, archival research, participatory methods and interviews, the project creates three unique datasets on everyday militarisation in Finland. By centering the 'home', the HomeFront project aims to make significant theoretical contributions in feminist International Relations, Peace Research, and Critical Security Studies while also providing valuable insights to societal discourse.
