Abstract
The article examines the development and formation of V.V. Kolesov's linguistic ideas in the field of Russian historical lexicology on a broad historiological and specific linguistic background. The search for his research method in the scientific activity of the scientist was carried out by referring to the works of outstanding Russian and Soviet comparativists (A.A. Potebnya, L.V. Shcherba, B.A. Larin), deep knowledge of medieval texts as the only reliable base in historical and lexicological research, the application of the philosophical-heuristic principle of the triad, which is the dialectical essence of the object and reflected in its modeling by the researcher.
