Abstract
The influx of English loanwords into the Russian language since the 1990s has been accompanied by a proliferation of compound words with the first element functioning as a determinative, which are often newly borrowed words. This article examines neologisms with the prepositive component proxy- (in our corpus, there are approximately 190 such words), which have been introduced into Russian at the beginning of the 21st century. The aim of this study is to describe the range of such vocabulary and the challenges associated with its analysis. In order to achieve this goal, the grammatical and semantic properties of proxy in Russian and English were examined, as well as the potential for both borrowing and derivates with this prepositive component in Russian. To this end, correspondences to these terms in the English language are traced (if possible) and a lexical and semantic classification of derivates with the prepositive component related to military and political terminology is provided. The main meanings of the prepositive component in new terms are highlighted. The methods used are statistical, comparative, classification.
