Abstract

This chapter participates in the discussion on risks and carceral spaces, and furthermore, introduces the concept of carceral riskscape. There is a strong, but less studied connection between risk and the carceral in the institutions of care. Concept of riskscape represent spaces embedded with risk and they are usually referred to in connection with health or environmental hazards. The concept of carceral riskscape combines spatio-temporal features of the carceral and risk to provide a new viewpoint on the mechanisms that create carceral spaces. Carceral riskscape is related to power relations, social practices and social groups. They can also be multiple in space. Through these dimensions it provides a useful tool to study institutions of care more thoroughly. It is especially useful to recognise how the inequalities are formed in institutions of care and how they have influence on the wellbeing of the people inside the institutions as well as the quality of care.
