    Abstract

This paper examines the contributions of different actuator parts to the magnetic force. The method is to decompose the magnetic field into components according to the current density and magnetization in distinct parts, and to interpret all the magnetic forces by means of these components. This enables isolation and quantification of the magnetic forces between any actuator parts. The approach is demonstrated with practical design problems to explain how different actuator parts contribute to the magnetic force.
