    Abstract

In this paper, an empirically driven classification of factors influencing the offshoring and backshoring decisions is developed, based on data from 275 offshoring and 160 backshoring projects. One set of factor bundles for offshoring and another set of factor bundles for backshoring are developed. These sets are compared and their relationships with post-relocation benefits are analyzed. This research contributes in two respects: an empirically driven classification scheme of decision factors for both offshoring and backshoring, and an analysis of the relationships between decision factors and benefits for each type of relocation direction.
