Abstract

This study investigates the influence of international university rankings on the University of São Paulo (USP), São Paulo State University (UNESP), and University of Campinas (UNICAMP), utilising stakeholder theory to interpret university managers' perspectives and dialogues. The research reveals that these rankings, whilst not significantly affecting the financial stability of these institutions, notably shape public and political perceptions of their quality and legitimacy. Additionally, the rankings play a pivotal role in forging university partnerships. Importantly, the study finds that rankings also impact the methods of institutional data collection and organisation, albeit with limited effect on the universities' societal engagement and decision-making processes. This highlights a nuanced impact of rankings, influencing both perception and administrative practices, yet not fully capturing the social relevance of these institutions.
