Abstract
Understanding the experiences of rehabilitators is a prerequisite for the development of the rehabilitation services. Undergoing a hip endoprosthesis operation because of arthrosis is quite common, and thus knowledge is required. The aim of this study was to understand rehabilitating from a hip endoprosthesis operation as rehabilitators tell about it.
The research data consist of twenty interviews. Ten rehabilitators were interviewed in their homes before the operation and after it. The data was analyzed with data-oriented narrative methods. Four story models were found in the data: Rehabilitating as a right, Autonomous rehabilitating, Insecurity of rehabilitating, and Trusting rehabilitating.
The story models tell about disharmonious interaction processes between those who need healthcare services and public healthcare, which is served with insufficient resources. These story models involve a victim story of healthcare workers, and a survivor story of which the patients are forced to become part. According to these research results public healthcare is facing a developmental challenge: how to hear rehabilitators and let them be more involved with their own rehabilitation processes.
