Abstract

Introduction: Young physicians will have a significant role and responsibility in managing future multidisciplinary healthcare organizations. This study analyzed the interest of young and senior physicians in leadership roles.
Methods: Physician interest in healthcare leadership was studied in the Physician 2018 survey. Participants in this study (n = 5115) were divided into young (graduated after 2007) and senior. Those who responded that they were very or fairly interested in working in management positions were classified as interested in healthcare leadership.
Results: A third of young and senior physicians were interested in leadership roles, with men more interested than women in both groups. The current management position was significantly related to the interest in both groups. In seniors, the specialist qualification was also significant. The university graduated
from or the number of children did not play a role in either group.
Discussion There is an interest in leadership positions among young and senior physicians. Young physicians who are already in management positions are motivated to lead, and the development of their leadership career should be supported.
