Abstract
Patients with epilepsy are referred to the emergency department due to the first, prolonged, recurring or complicated seizure. Prompt and properly targeted treatment may prevent the situation from developing into status epilepticus (SE). Adherence to a streamlined treatment chain and protocol are important prognostic factors. Drug treatment adjusted to the seizure type, potentially unknown etiology and epilepsy syndrome should be chosen rapidly while taking into account comorbidities and associated therapies of the patient. Intractable epilepsy is an indication for consultation of an epileptology unit and in cases of super-refractory SE, urgent consultation is recommended.
