Abstract
A method includes computing a cost (similarity) volume associated with a reference image; then, down-sampling (decimation) of the cost volume and the reference image into at least one level is performed, generating at least one down-sampled cost volume and at least one down-sampled reference image. A backward up-sampling is performed to generate at least one backward up-sampled cost volume and backward up-sampled reference image. A colour weight map associated with the cost volume and the at least one down-sampled cost volume is computed based on the reference image and backward up-sampled reference image (e.g., computing a difference between the reference image and backward up-sampled reference image), the reference image being one of the reference image and at least one down-sampled reference image. An aggregated cost volume is determined, with weighted averaging being based on the color weight map. The cost volume may be based on matching a reference image with plural shifted versions of a target image, e.g. rectified image of a scene or stereoscopic image pair. Sum of absolute differences (SAD) or sum of squared differences (SSD) methods may be used.
