Abstract
In Beijing, air quality is generally very poor. Traffic and coal combustion are major contributors of fine particulate matter (particles smaller than 2.5 µm) (Liu, 2014). Particulate matter is a major cause of premature deaths, accounting for 1.3 million deaths per year in China alone (Lelieveld, 2015). Large sensor networks could be used to identify particle sources, improve dispersion models and allow individuals to avoid dangerous pollution levels. Electrical sensors measure lung-deposited surface area concentration (LDSA), i. e., the surface area of particles that penetrate into the lungs.
