    Abstract

Cold spraying enables the production of dense and high-quality metallic coatings for several application areas including corrosion protection and
repair. Additionally, coating performance and deposition efficiency can be improved by using laser-assisted cold spraying. This process has
shown its potential to enhance coating properties compared with traditional cold spraying of aluminum. The present study focuses on a
comparison of coating properties between cold-sprayed and laser-assisted cold-sprayed aluminum coatings. A co-axial laser spray (COLA)
process was used to improve coating properties by heating a sprayed surface and particle flow with a laser during the spray process. The
purpose in this is to heat the surface without melting, increase thermal softening, and assist the better bonding between particles and substrate.
This, in turn, leads to the formation of dense and tight coating structures. Effect of cold spray processing on microstructure, mechanical
properties, toughness and residual stresses will be evaluated.
