Building a large and dynamic prosumer base is vital for the future flexible energy ecosystem. We know, however, relatively little of prosumer behavior, requirements and management in relation to Smart Grid energy systems. Residential prosumers are a heterogeneous group of individuals. To properly comprehend their role, we need to develop an adequate idea of the different types of prosumers and of the drivers of their decision-making and behavior. For this end, in this paper we approach the roles of prosumers in a Smart Grid innovation ecosystem from the point of view of co-creation. We outline the types of roles prosumers may assume when engaging in innovation and value creation, and propose they can be grouped into three categories depending on their level of skills, motivation and other features. We also situate the different types of prosumers into the processes of open innovation and co-creation.
