Abstract

Restraint moments develop over time in structures where simple-span precast prestressed beams are made continuous. These moments are hard to predict because they are highly dependent on the creep and shrinkage properties of the concrete used and the loading history followed the fabrication phases of the precast beams before connection. An experimental study was conducted where the development of restraint moments was monitored for a two-span precast prestressed test specimen that was made continuous at a relatively young age. The results of this study showed that material properties have a significant effect on the matter. The tested restraint moments were comparable to those determined according to Eurocode material models.
