Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterScientificpeer-review

Abstract

This chapter analyses two medieval model sermons on the feast day of Saint George, namely those of Dominican preachers Jacopo da Varazze and Vicent Ferrer. The idea is to find out whether the sermons on this feast day were used as a platform for representing masculine virtues suitable for nobility, especially the knights. Saint George was a saint who was believed to have helped crusaders fighting against the Muslims during the first crusade. Furthermore, he became a popular saint among the military class and his legend includes loads of material suitable for an ideal model to imitate a knight.
