Abstract

The article examines how Finnish digital games, game developers and game companies have been treated in the leading Finnish games magazine, Pelit, during 1992–2014. We examine how the domestic game industry has been presented and who are the ones writing. We pay special attention to the changes that have taken place in how mobile games are handled in the magazine. Based on the study, the number of stories concerning Finnish games has steadily increased during the review period. The relative share of stories concerning mobile games has also increased since the early 2000s, and especially in the 2010s. However, the relationship that the Pelit magazine has with mobile games is controversial, and negotiation between mobile games and “real” games forms a key tension in this definition struggle.
