Abstract
The latent phase of labour is a stage when the labour has begun but cervical opening is still slow. The
duration of the latent phase varies, as does the women’s coping. Although there is usually no need to
intervene in the delivery process during the latent phase, it is still necessary to identify those at risk of
complications. Using a coping scale can identify those whose resources are in danger of decreasing.
Care in the latent phase of labour needs to be tailored individually to the women’s needs and coping.
