Research output: Book/ReportCommissioned report

Abstract

Track loads depend highly on the rolling stock running along the track. The most important parameters concerning this are wagon type, axle weight, vehicle speed and the condition of the wagon. However, the interaction between vehicle and track has a great influence on wheel-rail contact forces and therefore also track properties have a significant effect on track loads. Increasing track loads means increasing maintenance costs as rails need more grinding and replacement because of the higher track loads. Track loads also cause transformations in track superstructure and vibrations in the track surrounding area.

As higher axle loads also cause higher track loads, freight wagons have a great
impact on track condition. This report contains first part of a wider research project, which aims to find out the effect of a freight wagon bogie type on track loads and rail wear on straight tracks, curves, and turnout areas. This research also focuses on the effect of axle weight, vehicle speed and the condition of freight wagon bogie type on track loads. It is important to get knowledge on the impact of different bogie types on track loads and possible track maintenance problems to be able to encourage the operators to the use of track-friendly bogies.

In this first part of the wider research project the goal was to get the necessary
data of different freight wagon bogies operating in Finland to be able to build the essential vehicle models. Also, the best way to evaluate the track loads caused by different bogies was tested with simulations, which were made with K14 and 18-100 bogie models. In the simulations it was observed that different bogies may have very different running behaviour in curved track sections, which can be seen in Tγ-values, wheel-rail contact forces and angle of attack values. The simulation tests also revealed that different bogies have different tendencies to cause vibrations to the track surrounding area. This phenomenon can be examined in the future with the help of acceleration frequency values or contact force frequency values. In the simulations, wheel flats were noticed to cause high dynamic loads. The effect of wheel flats should be studied in frequency domain with different bogies to be able to see its influence on ground vibrations near the track.

In this research the behaviour of different bogie types was also observed with the help of field measurements in Kouvola. In the field measurements the lateral forces between wheel and rail, Y/Q-values and wheelset angle of attacks were measured. These measurements were highly beneficial to get knowledge on the behaviour of different bogies and similar measurements would be reasonable to conduct in the future as well.
