Abstract

Today, global immigration links cultural diversity and discourses to local practices. Therefore, identities are complex, while misunderstandings are common, and there is a need for more intercultural dialogue. How can media education take into account these transcultural negotiations, which are largely taking place in and through media? How can we support young people in particular? This article reflects upon the kinds of pedagogical interventions that can promote the development of migrant youth transcultural media competencies, drawing upon the action research found in “Young people in the limelight: Towards agency through multiliteracies” (2015-2017). This study is based on seven media workshops organized around Finland in youth organizations and schools. Adopting the pedagogy of multiliteracies as a starting point (e.g. Cazden et al., 1996), this article explores teachers’ opportunities and challenges in three approaches to pedagogical intervention in transcultural media competencies: 1) considering the living worlds of young people in media pedagogy, 2) utilizing existing media capabilities and 3) supporting young people’s transcultural identifications. The results show that hands-on media education, particularly community-based media participation, offers various opportunities for pedagogical intervention. However, the successful adoption of transcultural perspectives in educational settings depends upon an explicit understanding of the goals and means of transcultural education. Thus, there seems to be an urgent need to improve teacher education regarding
transcultural media competencies for enhancing the intercultural dialogue globally and supporting gender identity.
