Abstract

In 2014-2020, the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency has carried out a nationwide study on the properties of aggregates and geosynthetic materials used in road and railway structures. The data has been collected through random sampling on sites and checking the related quality documentation.
The main target of the study is to make a sustained impact on material quality by increasing the knowledge and importing the results into the project quality management. The aim was to establish the compliance with the requirements of aggregates and geosynthetics and to build a general idea on the level of the material and documentation quality. In addition, the quality requirements, the project quality management processes and the guidance on sampling were developed.
In total, approximately 1 600 aggregate samples were studied from 135 construction projects. More than 3000 laboratory tests were performed. In addition, the quality documents solely were checked in about 30 projects. Results are published in 5 publications.
The testing on road and railway aggregates were concentrating typically on grading and particularly the amount of fines, strength properties of the aggregate, and grain shape. Samples were taken from the waring course of gravel roads (52 materials), and bearing layers (11) of roads, pavement aggregates (53) and railway ballast (19) and crushed (11) and natural (9) materials used in subballast and frost protection layers. In 2019 and 2020 also asphalt mixtures were sampled in 10 projects. In addition, crushed concrete from two projects were studied.
Also geosynthetics were studied. In 2015-2016, 18 geotextiles samples were tested. Six geosynthetic reinforcements products from road projects and geosynthetic clay liners and thin geomembranes used in road side groundwater protection were tested. Based on findings, the guidelines for geosynthetic were written for projects.
At least minor quality deviations were found in all studied materials. Flaws were most commonly found in quality documentation or CE marking. As a result of the study, a clear improvement has occurred in some materials.
