Contributors: Kortesoja Matti / A seminar on epistemic governanceTwo-day seminar organized by Sovako Graduate School for Cultural Research of Power and Governance. December 3rd–4th,Meriton Grand Conference & Spa Hotel, Tallinn. This seminar will focus on power and governance that functions through influencing actors' understandings of facts. Whether actors use, say, science, money or tanks as their consultants, the objective in utilizing those resources is to convince others of what they want, should or must do in a given situation, and such convincing is epistemic in nature in the sense that its target is people’s conceptions of reality, of themselves and others as actors, and of norms and ideals. Related to this approach to power and politics, the twoday seminar will consist of four themes, each of which will be allotted a two-hour session: science in politics and policy-making; the media; Policy-making in the EU; and imageries of society in governance. In each session there will be a couple of short slide show presentations based on work in progress related to that theme, followed by general discussion. In addition, before the seminar the participants will receive an article draft on epistemic governance.
