Features Of Mathematical Thinking In Upper-secondary School

    Contributors: Joutsenlahti J, Silfverberg H / The actual question in upper-secondary schools and in universities is: what kind of mathematical proficiency and mathematical thinking new students have? If we recognize features of students’ mathematical thinking we could develop the curricula, learning materials and teaching methods more effective. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources UsedThe empirical data consists of test results (n=89804) of matriculation examinations in mathematics, students' (n=103) test results in the longer courses of mathematics and students' interviews (n=6) in an upper-secondary school. In addition, students (n=384) in eight secondary schools answered the questionnaire. The questionnaire included 46 Likert-scaled statements.The empirical data of the matriculation examinations and of an upper-secondary school was analysed using usual statistical analysis. Applied Wilson taxonomy has been used in the categorisation of tasks of the tests. Using regression analysis especially a two-by-two frequency table was formed. Students' view of mathematics was researched using frequency and factor analyses.Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or FindingsFound four groups were identified in the two-by-two frequency table. They are''Successful students'', ''Mature students'', ''´Just doing´ students'' and its subgroup ''Losers'' and ''Disappointed students''. Students' mathematical thinking is described through five features of mathematical proficiency: conceptualunderstanding, strategic competence, adaptive reasoning, proceduralfluency and the view of mathematics. Students' mathematical thinkingin the two-by-two frequency table is divided into three categories: (1)contents bound mathematical thinking (2) broad mathematicalthinking and (3) narrow mathematical thinking. The group ''Disappointed students'' consist of students who have had success in the specific substance of the longer course in mathematics, but who failed in the mathematics test in the matriculation examination.
