DescriptionTraditionally, time-dependent properties like creep, stress relaxation and strain rate sensitivity as well as fatigue properties of metals have been measured on bulk samples. With the advent of thin film deposition techniques, it has become necessary to adapt bulk mechanical testing for thin films. In this talk, micro-compression creep, stress relaxation, strain rate sensitivity tests and compression-compression high cycle fatigue tests performed in-situ in a scanning electron microscope on nanocrystalline metals will be introduced. The extracted deformation exponents and activation parameters will be discussed to understand the role of dislocation plasticity and grain boundary mediated processes. This presentation will report, for the first time, the development of micropillar compression-compression high cycle fatigue tests going up to 10 million cycles. This study aims to develop and validate each of these tests at the micron scale and provide useful insights into developing similar indentation based tests. Future research directions will be discussed.
