Description
The presentation addresses the issue of developing and implementing an online training programme on teaching and learning in higher education. The training was organised through a Finnish-Palestinian cooperation project “eTraining FinPal”. The project is funded by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland through its Higher Education Institutions Institutional Cooperation Instrument (HEI ICI). The first phase of the training (training of trainers) was organised in 2018-2019 for 16 Palestinian academics. A combination of online learning platforms including asynchronous and synchronous communication forms were utilised in the training taking into consideration both Palestinian and Finnish educational environments (such as available facilities and technical equipment). The training was designed in collaboration with the Palestinian university (Islamic University of Gaza) based on needs assessment and quantitative and qualitative research.The authors will discuss the benefits and challenges of online education, especially in the context of transnational professional development programme on university pedagogy. Transnational education refers to all types of education in which students are located in a country different from the one where the awarding institution is based. In our case, the students are university teachers participating in a professional development programme organised mainly online.
In our presentation, we will discuss some pedagogical and practical challenges related to the transnational professional education programme provided online. Lessons learned and feedback from the participants will also be discussed. We will also address the politically and economically challenging context of the target institution that is located in the Gaza Strip in the Palestinian Territories (Israeli blockade affects the universities in Gaza in various ways, such as difficulties of travelling abroad and lack of financial and material resources).
