(Presentation) My Northern Project: Doctoral research project 'The Utterly Unknown: (Lack of) knowledge about the indigenous Sámi in Finnish teacher education'

Presentation abstract:
The majority population in Finland is afflicted by a deep knowledge gap concerning the Sámi, the northern indigenous people. Mainstream ignorance is not incidental but rooted in narrow nationalistic narratives and active processes of colonization prevailing in Finland. Teachers in Finnish schools have a significant role in bridging the knowledge gap and shifting the discourse that disregards the Sámi. Thus, this doctoral thesis examines how Finnish teacher education (TE) is committed to increasing Sámi knowledge and knowledge about the Arctic intercultural histories.

Presentation session:
Speakers from Europe and Quebec, Canada, presented their PhD/Master's research projects as a part of Mon Projet Nordique/My Northern Project competition session held in Arctic Circle Assembly. Each of the Nordic speakers were invited to the final by the UArctic network, representing their respective country and institution.
