The Digital Silk Road has been developed as a corollary to the Belt and Road Initiative. As a long-term project, it has been mainly operational in Eurasia. More recently, ZTE, Huawei, Alibaba and other internet and communication companies have been increasingly active across the globe. Chinese firms have been instrumental in launching Africa’s digital economy. In addition, Huawei and ZTE have been heavily involved in the construction of the region’s digital infrastructure. Will this be an advantage for the consolidation of Huawei’s presence in the region? Are there security concerns that need to be addressed? How might cooperation impact Africa’s digital landscapes, including issues around privacy and broader internet governance?
