Anna Kuutsa

I work as a university instructor in literary studies at Tampere University. My ongoing postdoctoral research, affiliated with the Political Temporalities consortium of the Research Council of Finland (PI Mari Hatavara, Tampere University), focuses on the rhetorical uses of narratives and narrativity in Finnish political debate.

In my PhD dissertation (completed in 2024) I studied the relationship between dialogue narration and the theme of society in the prose works of early modernist Finnish author Maria Jotuni (1880–1943). One of the key aims of the study was to broaden the theoretical discussion on dialogue narration by addressing the telling features of direct speech presentation and distinguishing the narrative features of dialogue narration. The concepts, definitions and methods developed in the dissertation can be applied to studies concerning different fictional and nonfictional types of speech presentation in general.

I have experience in teaching and supervising at BA and MA level, as well as organising academic events. My areas of expertise include narrative theory, the linguistic approach to narrative, dialogue narration theory, feminist narratologies, Finnish modernism, and literary analysis. I am interested in how dialogue narration and speech presentation are applied in various texts and media.
