Fernando Nieto is an architect and Associate Professor of Architectural Design at Tampere University School of Architecture in Finland. He holds a PhD in Advanced Architectural Design and a Master of Advanced Studies in Collective Housing from the Technical University of Madrid (ETSAM-UPM, Spain), and a Master's Degree in Architecture from the University of Valladolid (ETSAVA, Spain), having studied at the National Technical University of Athens (Greece) too. He has done research at the Technical University of Madrid, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (Switzerland), Aalto University and Tampere University (Finland), and has taught at the latter two universities. His work as an architect has been awarded, published and exhibited at national and international forums. His research interests unfold in between the theory and practice of architecture, drawing upon the rapprochement of the poles community-privacy and its spatial implications in the built environment by intertwining research and design methodologies in architecture. He has widely published and lectured on the connections and reciprocal influence between housing standards systems and design methodologies. He leads the SPREAD (Spatial & Speculative Research in Architectural Design) research group at Tampere University Faculty of Built Environment, and is co-founder and co-editor-in-chief of the HipoTesis research platform.
