Description of ongoing research

I'm working as a postdoctoral researcher in the project "The Politics of Proximity in the 1900s and 2000s in Finland" (PI, Johanna Vuorelma). The project examines the political significance of proximity, which has a significant impact on democracy, participation, political trust, and political legitimacy. 

Past research

In my completed doctoral research project "Political Ontology and Imagination: Towards a Democratic Political Imagination" (2023, University of Helsinki) I combined perspectives in current research on political imagination, political ontology and democratic theory to sketch out a new theory of political ontology. The aim was to shed light on the political ontology of democracy through an enriched conception of the role of political imagination for democratic politics.

After finishing my doctoral dissertation, I worked on a personal postdoctoral research project entitled "Political Imagination and the Crisis of Political Rationality" (2023-2025) which aimed to redescribe political rationality as a facet of political imagination and to diagnose current political polarization in liberal democracies as a result of a deepening splintering in the way we imagine political reality. The project also aimed to consider the ways in which political rationality, understood as emanating from shared political imagination, could be reconstructed and reonciled with democratic values and political pluralism without imposing monovalent, dominating or oppressive forms of political rationality.

During 2025 I was also a visiting postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Political Science at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (Germany).
