In this study a framework for automated steel connection design is pro-
posed. Minimum cost connections are sought by employing the methods of mathematical optimization. The manufacturing cost of the connection is evaluated using a feature-based costing method. The problem formulation ensures that the results of optimization are applicable for the designer such that the connection has required resistance and rotational stiffness. The joint design framework is demonstrated on end plate connections. As the approach is generic, it can be readily extended to other types of connections as well.
