The Epilogue briefly reflects on the definition of modernity in the emotions history, exhorting modernists to read beyond and before their period of specialisation in order to challenge how periods are formulated. It then turns to the type of knowledge produced by historians and asks whether it can be applied to, or to what extent it could serve as a check against, social and emotional learning curricula that essentialise either culture, emotions or both. Finally, it paints in broad strokes what the inter-disciplinary or post-disciplinary future of emotion research might be, carving out a space or a voice for historians in the emotion laboratory.
