Purpose
Due to changing logistics environment and trends affecting logistics, companies are facing continuous need to revise their logistics operations and improve efficiency. The purpose of this paper is to describe students’ learning experiences and case companies’ views regarding the use of real industry and trade logistics challenges and problems in master level logistics education. The aim is to find out the benefits of using real-life cases in logistics studies. Additionally, learning outcomes and success factors of this kind of teaching and learning method are studied.
Research Approach
This paper presents findings regarding ‘Analysing logistics systems of trade and industry’ course which was organized at Tampere University in autumn 2021. One of the authors of this paper is the course instructor and has designed the implementation. In this paper, the course feedback and self-assessments provided by students and feedback from the companies are analysed. The course instructor’s observations about guidance meetings with students and company representatives are also examined. On the course, the assignments are created together with the trade and industry companies. Altogether 35 students and seven companies with nine different challenges participated in the course implementation.
Findings and Originality
Using real-life challenges as course assignments give students chance to apply their own competences, to learn working life skills, to see challenges faced currently in the logistics industry and to get valuable connections with trade and industry companies. The feedback from the course has been positive. Both students and company representatives have found the course and assignment useful. Students are motivated and they learn to analyse and solve the challenges and problems, and companies get appreciated information, new perspectives, and solution suggestions related to their challenges and problems. To be successful in this kind of project and education method, the company’s commitment, and time resources to guide students together with the course instructor are essential.
Research Impact
The paper gives valuable information about the learning experiences and learning outcomes when using real company challenges in the context of logistics higher education. The elements effecting the successfulness of the method are also presented.
Practical Impact
The results of this study can be used to encourage logistics companies to participate in education and give real challenges and problems to be solved by students.
