Abstrakti

Ethical reflection concerning robots and AI, “roboethics”, has been exceptionally widespread in recent years, and has also led to pressures towards “ethics washing”. Various forms of “robo-hype” (and dystopias) have fueled the demand for ethical reflection. After briefly introducing the topic of robotics, this entry discusses the philosophical question of how robots can be assessed morally, if they are not genuine moral agents that have moral duties. After that, the entry discusses the moral principles of respect for human dignity, respect for human autonomy, nonmaleficence and beneficence, and discrimination. The entry ends with a critical social theoretic discussion of practices that have been called “ethics framing”, “ethics-washing” and “robo-hype”.
