A setup for measuring the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 coatings has been custom made at the Danish Technological Institute. The photocatalytic activity is measured indirectly by a detector (Vaisala Carbocap GMP343) monitoring the CO2 concentration in the chamber. The CO2 is a product from the photocatalytic degradation of gaseous organic substrates. In the present setup, the degradation of acetone and ethylene has been investigated, but other gaseous substrates could be tested as well.
In order to control the background atmosphere with regards to the initial CO2 concentration and humidity the chamber is flushed with technical air flowing through a humidifier prior to each measurement. Afterwards either acetone is injected into the closed chamber by a syringe or air with a set concentration of ethylene is flushed through the chamber which is subsequently closed. To initiate the photocatalytic degradation a UV lamp is mounted over the chamber illuminating the surface of the TiO2 coated sample through a quartz glass.
