It is arguably vital in all research involving people to understand their diversity. In Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), however, 'older adults' are often treated as a homogeneous group [1]. This is a stereotype that needs challenging to ensure developing and working with this demographic meets people's actual needs, experiences, skills and abilities. In designing technology and user experience (UX) as well as beyond. Otherwise, services, products or interventions will not reach and 'chime with’ their addressees. Responding to this, we investigated Tabletop Role-Playing (TTRPG) as a method to promote reflection on 'older adults' [2]: Five doctoral researchers (26-31 years, from HCI, Game Studies, Computer Science and Gerontology, with no to high TTRPG experience) met to play 70-year-old characters with varying technological, social and physical skills/abilities on an adventure set in a sustainable future. Reflection was further supported through participatory arts-based methods (drawings, visual sketchnotes), observation by other workshop attendees and discussions. We present a methodological reflection on our workshop (with a focus on TTRPG aspects) to share lessons learned and identify possible venues for TTRPG as a method to extend and complement existing methods in gerontological research.
