title = "Urban Rhythmscapes—Examining the Temporal Forms of Urban Spaces",
abstract = "Like music, much of the city exists in time, and rhythm, as a measure of temporality and repetition, is a key element of it. A temporal view on the city is important in understanding the dynamic form of urban space and what effects its making. This chapter draws together and further expands the key insights from my recent PhD work that developed {\textquoteleft}rhythm{\textquoteright} as a research methodology for the study of urban public spaces and environmental experiences in the context of day-to-day urban mobilities. The theoretical framework of the work is anchored to time-oriented urban research approaches, {\textquoteleft}rhythmanalysis{\textquoteright} in specific, which emphasizes the qualitative and the experienced aspects of rhythm alongside the quantitative. The main question is: how can we better understand urban space as a rhythmic phenomenon that is continuously made and remade through the practices and activities taking place in it? The term {\textquoteleft}rhythmscape,{\textquoteright} introduced in previous research literature is examined here as an integrating term that could be used to capture the multiplicity of simultaneous spatial rhythms and their interactions.",
